Description
Common Name: L294 Sucunduri Galaxy Pleco
Scientific Name: Leporacanthicus sp.
Other Names: Sucunduri Pleco, Galaxy Leporacanthicus
The L294 Sucunduri Galaxy Pleco is a rare and strikingly patterned Leporacanthicus species known for its dark body covered in numerous small, bright white spots, resembling a starry night sky. This species has a sleek, elongated body with a broad head, large eyes, and a powerful sucker mouth adapted for clinging to rocks in fast-flowing waters. Unlike many plecos that are herbivorous, the L294 is more carnivorous, making it a unique addition to properly maintained aquariums.
Habitat and Distribution:
Native to Brazil, the L294 Pleco is found in the Sucunduri River, a tributary of the Madeira River system. This region features clear, oxygen-rich waters with moderate to strong currents and rocky substrates. The species is often found in deep crevices and caves where it seeks shelter during the day.
Size and Lifespan:
This species can grow to about 7-9 inches (18-23 cm). With proper care, it can live for 10-12 years.
Diet and Behavior:
The Sucunduri Galaxy Pleco is a carnivore with a strong preference for protein-rich foods. In the wild, it feeds on small crustaceans, insect larvae, and biofilm. In captivity, it requires high-quality sinking carnivore pellets, frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, blackworms, and chopped raw tilapia, and occasional vegetable matter like spirulina wafers or blanched zucchini. It is semi-aggressive and territorial, particularly with other plecos, so providing multiple hiding spots is essential.
Breeding and Reproduction:
Breeding Leporacanthicus species in captivity is challenging and rarely documented. They are believed to be cave spawners, with males guarding the eggs inside their chosen cave. To encourage breeding, a well-structured tank with numerous caves, stable water parameters, and a protein-rich diet is required.
Aquarium Care and Tank Requirements:
A minimum of 75 gallons is recommended for a single specimen, with a larger tank (100+ gallons) preferred for long-term care or multiple plecos. Their ideal tank setup includes a fine gravel or sand substrate, multiple rock caves and driftwood for shelter, strong filtration with high oxygenation, moderate to strong water flow to replicate river conditions, and subdued lighting to encourage natural behaviors.
Ideal Tank Mates:
The L294 Pleco is semi-aggressive and should be housed with similarly sized, non-aggressive tank mates. Suitable companions include Severums, Geophagus Cichlids, Angelfish, Silver Dollars, Larger Tetras, and other medium to large South American species. Avoid highly aggressive bottom dwellers that may compete for territory.
Difficulty Level:
Intermediate to Advanced. They require stable water conditions, a high-protein diet, and a well-oxygenated environment to thrive.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 78-86°F (26-30°C)
- pH: 6.5-7.5
- General Hardness (GH): 5-15 dGH
- Carbonate Hardness (KH): 3-10 dKH
- Ammonia: 0 ppm
- Nitrite: 0 ppm
- Nitrate: <20 ppm (regular water changes required)
Additional Information:
- They require high oxygen levels, making strong filtration and additional aeration essential.
- Their carnivorous nature means they require a protein-rich diet and should not be relied upon as algae eaters.
- Providing multiple hiding spots will help reduce aggression and stress.
The L294 Sucunduri Galaxy Pleco is a stunning and unique species that makes a fantastic addition to a well-maintained, high-flow aquarium. With proper care and the right environment, it will thrive and display its beautiful spotted pattern for years to come.
