Description
Common Name: L75 Para Pleco
Scientific Name: Peckoltia sabaji
Other Names: Sabaji Pleco
The L75 Para Pleco is a beautifully patterned Peckoltia species featuring a light to dark brown base color adorned with irregular black or dark markings. Its striking pattern and relatively manageable size make it a popular pleco among aquarists. Unlike some other plecos, it is an omnivore that benefits from both meaty and plant-based foods. It is generally peaceful but can be territorial with other plecos.
Habitat and Distribution:
Native to Brazil, the L75 Para Pleco is found in the Rio Tocantins and Rio Pará, where it inhabits well-oxygenated waters with moderate currents. It prefers areas with submerged driftwood, rocky structures, and leaf litter, which provide shelter and feeding opportunities.
Size and Lifespan:
This species reaches about 7-9 inches (18-23 cm). With proper care, it can live for 10-15 years.
Diet and Behavior:
The Para Pleco is an omnivore with a balanced diet consisting of protein and plant-based foods. In the wild, it feeds on small invertebrates, algae, and biofilm. In captivity, its diet should include high-quality sinking carnivore pellets, frozen or live foods such as bloodworms and blackworms, as well as vegetable-based foods like spirulina wafers and blanched zucchini. It is a mostly nocturnal fish that hides during the day and becomes more active at night.
Breeding and Reproduction:
Breeding Peckoltia sabaji in captivity is possible but not common. Like other Peckoltia species, they are cave spawners, with males guarding the eggs inside rock crevices or driftwood cavities. To encourage breeding, provide multiple caves, stable warm water conditions, and a diet high in protein. Once the fry hatch, they can be fed baby brine shrimp and finely crushed sinking foods.
Aquarium Care and Tank Requirements:
A minimum of 55 gallons is required for a single specimen, with a larger tank (75+ gallons) recommended for community setups. Their ideal tank setup includes a soft sand or fine gravel substrate, multiple caves and driftwood for shelter, strong filtration with good oxygenation, moderate water flow to replicate river conditions, and subdued lighting to reduce stress.
Ideal Tank Mates:
The L75 Para Pleco is generally peaceful and coexists well with other non-aggressive fish. Suitable tank mates include Tetras, Corydoras, Geophagus Cichlids, Severums, Angelfish, Silver Dollars, and other medium-sized South American species. Avoid housing with highly aggressive plecos unless the tank is large enough to provide separate territories.
Difficulty Level:
Intermediate. They require stable water conditions, a varied diet, and ample hiding spots to thrive.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 77-84°F (25-29°C)
- pH: 6.5-7.5
- General Hardness (GH): 5-12 dGH
- Carbonate Hardness (KH): 3-8 dKH
- Ammonia: 0 ppm
- Nitrite: 0 ppm
- Nitrate: <20 ppm (regular water changes required)
Additional Information:
- Strong filtration is recommended, as they prefer well-oxygenated water.
- They require a mix of protein and plant-based foods for optimal health.
- Multiple hiding spots will help reduce aggression among tank mates.
The L75 Para Pleco is a stunning and relatively easy-to-care-for pleco, making it a great choice for aquarists looking for a beautifully patterned bottom-dweller. With proper care, it can be a long-lived and rewarding addition to a well-maintained aquarium.
