Description
Common Name: Prince Tiger Pleco
Scientific Name: Peckoltia sp. (L377)
Other Names: L377, Prince Tiger Peckoltia
The Prince Tiger Pleco is a visually captivating freshwater fish known for its distinctive striped pattern and robust body. Its coloration typically includes a combination of dark brown or black with lighter, tiger-like stripes running vertically along its body. This attractive pattern, along with its manageable size, makes it a popular choice among pleco enthusiasts. The Prince Tiger Pleco has a sturdy body covered with bony plates and a sucker-like mouth adapted for grazing on surfaces.
Habitat and Distribution:
The Prince Tiger Pleco is native to the rivers and tributaries of the Amazon Basin in Brazil. They are typically found in fast-flowing waters with rocky substrates and plenty of submerged wood and rocks, which provide numerous surfaces for grazing on algae and biofilm and offer hiding spots.
Size and Lifespan:
In both the wild and captivity, Prince Tiger Plecos typically grow to about 5-6 inches (12-15 cm) in length. With proper care, their lifespan can range from 8 to 10 years, depending on the quality of their diet and water conditions.
Diet and Behavior:
Prince Tiger Plecos are omnivorous, feeding on a mix of algae, biofilm, plant matter, and small invertebrates in their natural habitat. In an aquarium, their diet should include high-quality sinking algae wafers, spirulina tablets, and fresh vegetables such as zucchini, cucumber, and spinach. They also benefit from protein-rich foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and high-quality carnivorous pellets. These plecos are primarily nocturnal and most active during the night. They are generally peaceful and can be kept with other non-aggressive fish, making them suitable for community tanks.
Breeding and Reproduction:
Breeding Prince Tiger Plecos in captivity is possible and can be rewarding. They are cave spawners, with the female laying eggs in a secluded spot such as a small cave or hollow piece of driftwood. The male guards the eggs until they hatch. To encourage breeding, provide plenty of hiding spots and caves, and maintain optimal water conditions with regular water changes. Slightly raising the temperature and feeding a varied diet can also help stimulate spawning.
Aquarium Care and Tank Requirements:
Prince Tiger Plecos require a minimum tank size of 30 gallons. The tank should include plenty of hiding spots created with rocks, driftwood, and caves to mimic their natural habitat and reduce stress. Driftwood is particularly important as it provides both shelter and a source of food. Efficient filtration and regular water changes are essential to maintain water quality. The water temperature should be kept between 75-82°F (24-28°C), with a pH of 6.5-7.5 and soft to moderately hard water.
Ideal Tank Mates:
Prince Tiger Plecos are peaceful and can be kept with other small, non-aggressive fish. Suitable tank mates include tetras, rasboras, dwarf cichlids, and other small catfish. Avoid housing them with large, aggressive species that may cause stress or injury.
Difficulty Level:
Intermediate. While Prince Tiger Plecos are hardy and adaptable, they require specific tank conditions and diet to thrive, making them suitable for aquarists with some experience.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 75-82°F (24-28°C)
- pH: 6.5-7.5
- General Hardness (GH): 4-10 dGH
- Carbonate Hardness (KH): 2-6 dKH
