Description
Common Name: Goldseam Gold Nugget Pleco (L177)
Scientific Name: Baryancistrus xanthellus
Other Names: L177 Pleco, Gold Nugget Pleco
The Goldseam Gold Nugget Pleco is a visually striking fish adorned with bright yellow spots, which appear like golden nuggets set against a darker body background. It also features a characteristic golden seam along the edge of its dorsal and caudal fins, distinguishing it from other similar species.
Habitat and Distribution: This species is native to the Rio Xingu in Brazil, thriving in fast-flowing waters with rocky substrates.
Size and Lifespan: The Goldseam Gold Nugget Pleco grows up to approximately 8-10 inches (20-25 cm) in captivity. With proper care, they can live upwards of 10 years.
Diet and Behavior: Primarily herbivores, they feed on algae and biofilm in the wild. In an aquarium, they appreciate high-quality sinking algae wafers, supplemented with fresh vegetables like zucchini, spinach, and peas. Occasional protein-based foods like bloodworms can be offered as well. They're more active during the evening and nighttime.
Breeding and Reproduction: Breeding in captivity is somewhat rare. However, providing a suitable environment with hiding spots, caves, and clean water may encourage breeding behavior. Males typically guard the eggs, which are laid inside caves.
Aquarium Care and Tank Requirements: A tank size of at least 50 gallons is recommended, though larger is always better. Recreate their natural environment with a strong water current, rocks, caves, and driftwood. A sand substrate is preferable, allowing them to sift through. Regular water changes and good filtration are essential.
Ideal Tank Mates: This pleco is generally peaceful and can coexist with a variety of fish. Ideal tank mates include tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and other non-aggressive fish. It is best to avoid keeping them with overly aggressive or very territorial fish.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate. While not overly demanding, they do have specific water flow and diet needs, making them better suited for those with some aquarium experience.
