Description
Common Name: Three Beacon Pleco
Scientific Name: Leporacanthicus triactis
Other Names: L091 Pleco, Triactis Pleco
The Three Beacon Pleco, known in the aquarium trade as L091, is a distinctive and attractive pleco species. It is known for its dark body coloration, often black or dark brown, contrasted with bright white or yellow spots or stripes. The name "Three Beacon" comes from the three distinct spots that can be found on its dorsal fin, adipose fin, and tail, which can appear as bright, beacon-like markings, especially in a well-lit aquarium.
Habitat and Distribution: Leporacanthicus triactis is native to the Orinoco River basin in Venezuela, South America. They inhabit fast-flowing, oxygen-rich river environments, often hiding in rocky crevices.
Size and Lifespan: In captivity, the Three Beacon Pleco typically grows to about 6-8 inches in length. They can have a lifespan of several years, often around 5-10 years, with proper care.
Diet and Behavior: This species is omnivorous but leans towards a carnivorous diet. It feeds on a variety of foods, including algae, biofilm, small invertebrates, and detritus in the wild. In an aquarium setting, its diet should include high-quality sinking pellets or wafers, frozen or live foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp, and occasional vegetable matter. The Three Beacon Pleco is generally nocturnal and can be quite shy.
Breeding and Reproduction: Breeding the L091 in captivity is challenging. Like many pleco species, they are cave spawners, with the male guarding the eggs in a secure location.
Aquarium Care and Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 55 gallons is recommended for this species. The aquarium should include plenty of hiding spots, such as caves and driftwood, along with a strong water flow and well-oxygenated water. Regular water changes and good filtration are important to maintain water quality.
Ideal Tank Mates: The Three Beacon Pleco is generally peaceful and can be kept with a variety of fish species. Suitable tank mates include other peaceful to semi-aggressive fish of similar size. Care should be taken to avoid housing them with overly aggressive species or very small fish.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate. While they are not overly aggressive, their specific dietary needs and preference for fast-flowing water make them more suitable for aquarists with some experience.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 76-82°F (24-28°C)
- pH: 6.5-7.5
- General Hardness (GH): 5-15 dGH
- Carbonate Hardness (KH): 3-8 dKH
- Ammonia: 0 ppm
- Nitrite: 0 ppm
- Nitrate: <20 ppm
Additional Information:
- The L091's striking pattern and relatively manageable size make it a sought-after species among pleco enthusiasts.
- They may require time to adjust to new environments and can be sensitive to fluctuations in water parameters.
- Providing a varied diet and ensuring a stress-free environment are key to maintaining their health and wellbeing.
