Description
Common Name: Albino Giant Gourami
Scientific Name: Osphronemus goramy
The Albino Giant Gourami is a striking freshwater fish known for its large size and unique albino coloration. This species features a pale, creamy body with red or pink eyes, making it a standout addition to any large aquarium.
Habitat and Distribution:
The Giant Gourami is native to Southeast Asia, particularly in countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. They are typically found in slow-moving rivers, lakes, and swamps with plenty of vegetation. The albino variant is bred in captivity and is not found in the wild.
Size and Lifespan:
In both the wild and captivity, Albino Giant Gouramis can grow up to 20-24 inches (50-60 cm) in length. With proper care, their lifespan can range from 15 to 25 years, depending on the quality of their diet and water conditions.
Diet and Behavior:
Albino Giant Gouramis are omnivorous, feeding on a variety of plant matter, small invertebrates, and detritus in their natural habitat. In an aquarium, their diet should include high-quality pellets, fresh vegetables such as lettuce, spinach, and peas, and occasional protein-rich foods like shrimp, bloodworms, and small fish. These gouramis are known for their peaceful and inquisitive nature. They are generally calm and can become quite interactive with their owners, often recognizing and responding to them.
Breeding and Reproduction:
Breeding Albino Giant Gouramis in captivity is possible but can be challenging due to their large size. They are bubble nest builders, with the male creating a nest at the water surface using bubbles and plant material. After spawning, the male guards the nest and the eggs until they hatch. To encourage breeding, provide a spacious tank with plenty of plants for cover, maintain optimal water conditions, and feed a varied diet to enhance their health and breeding readiness.
Aquarium Care and Tank Requirements:
Due to their large size, Albino Giant Gouramis require a very large aquarium, with a minimum of 200 gallons recommended for adult specimens. The tank should have a soft, sandy, or fine gravel substrate to prevent injury. Include plenty of plants, rocks, and driftwood to mimic their natural habitat and provide hiding spots. Efficient filtration and regular water changes are essential to maintaining water quality. The water temperature should be kept between 75-82°F (24-28°C), with a pH of 6.5-8.0 and soft to moderately hard water.
Ideal Tank Mates:
Albino Giant Gouramis are generally peaceful and can be kept with other non-aggressive fish that share similar water parameter requirements. Suitable tank mates include other large, peaceful fish such as other gouramis, large tetras, barbs, and peaceful cichlids. Avoid housing them with highly aggressive or fin-nipping species that may cause stress or injury.
Difficulty Level:
Intermediate to Advanced. While Albino Giant Gouramis are hardy and adaptable, their large size and specific tank requirements make them suitable for aquarists with some experience. Their peaceful nature and striking appearance make them a great addition to large community tanks.
Water Parameters:

• Carbonate Hardness (KH): 4-12 dKH
• Ammonia: 0 ppm (ideal)
