Description
Common Name: Flyer Pleco
Scientific Name: Pseudolithoxus anthrax
Other Names: L235 Pleco, Anthrax Pleco
The Flyer Pleco, known scientifically as Pseudolithoxus anthrax, is a distinctive and attractive species in the Loricariidae family. It has a dark, almost black body coloration with contrasting white or light-colored spots spread across its body and fins. The Flyer Pleco's body shape is somewhat flattened, which aids in its ability to cling to rocks in fast-flowing water.
Habitat and Distribution:
This species originates from the Orinoco River basin in Venezuela. It is typically found in fast-flowing, rocky environments where it feeds on algae and biofilm growing on submerged surfaces.
Size and Lifespan:
In captivity, the Flyer Pleco usually grows to about 5-6 inches in length. With proper care, these fish can have a lifespan of approximately 10 years.
Diet and Behavior:
Flyer Plecos are mainly herbivorous, feeding on algae and biofilm in their natural habitat. In aquariums, their diet should include high-quality algae-based foods, such as sinking pellets or wafers, supplemented with fresh vegetables like zucchini or cucumber. They are typically peaceful and nocturnal, becoming more active at night.
Breeding and Reproduction:
Breeding Flyer Plecos in captivity is quite challenging. They are cave spawners, and the male is responsible for guarding the eggs within a cave or crevice.
Aquarium Care and Tank Requirements:
A minimum tank size of 30 gallons is recommended. The aquarium should have plenty of hiding spots and surfaces for algae growth, such as rocks and driftwood. The water should be well-oxygenated with a moderate to strong current to replicate their natural riverine habitat.
Ideal Tank Mates:
The Flyer Pleco is generally peaceful and can be housed with a variety of similarly sized and temperament fish. Care should be taken to avoid housing them with aggressive species that might outcompete them for food or territory.
Difficulty Level:
Intermediate. Their specific dietary needs and preference for fast-flowing water make them suitable for aquarists with some experience.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 76-82°F (24-28°C)
- pH: 6.5-7.5
- General Hardness (GH): 6-10 dGH
- Carbonate Hardness (KH): 4-8 dKH
- Ammonia: 0 ppm
- Nitrite: 0 ppm
- Nitrate: <20 ppm
Additional Information:
- The Flyer Pleco's unique appearance, with its spotted pattern and dark coloration, makes it a visually appealing choice for many aquarists.
- Regular water changes are important to maintain water quality, especially given their preference for clean, well-oxygenated water.
- As with many plecos, they may be shy initially and require time to acclimate and become comfortable in their new environment.
