Description
Common Name: Mango Pleco
Scientific Name: Baryancistrus chrysolomus (L047)
Other Names: L047 Pleco, Gold Seam Pleco, Mangum Pleco
The Mango Pleco, particularly classified as L047, is a visually appealing fish characterized by its attractive golden-yellow seam along the edge of its dorsal, caudal, and pectoral fins. The body coloration is a deep, velvety black, which contrasts beautifully with the striking gold seam, hence its alternate name, Gold Seam Pleco.
Habitat and Distribution: Originating from the Xingu River in Brazil, Mango Plecos can be found in the warm, fast-flowing waters with rocky substrates. Their dark body coloration helps them blend into the rocky environment, offering protection from potential predators.
Size and Lifespan: In captivity, the Mango Pleco typically reaches a length of 8-10 inches (20-25 cm). With proper care and a balanced diet, they can live for 10-15 years.
Diet and Behavior: Mango Plecos are omnivores. Their diet in the wild consists of algae, aufwuchs, and small crustaceans. In an aquarium setting, they will appreciate high-quality sinking pellets, blanched vegetables, and occasional protein-based foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp. They tend to be nocturnal and may be more active during the evening hours.
Breeding and Reproduction: Breeding Baryancistrus chrysolomus in captivity is a challenging endeavor and is not commonly achieved. Males typically guard caves and will protect the eggs once spawning has occurred.
Aquarium Care and Tank Requirements: A tank of at least 50 gallons is recommended. The water should be well-oxygenated with a strong flow to mimic their natural environment. Plenty of hiding spots, using rocks and driftwood, are essential. The substrate can be sandy or fine gravel.
Ideal Tank Mates: Being generally peaceful, the Mango Pleco can coexist with a variety of tankmates including medium-sized fish like tetras, corydoras, and rasboras. It's advised to avoid aggressive species or those that might compete for the same hiding spots.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate to Advanced. They require specific water conditions and can be sensitive to changes in water parameters.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 79-86°F (26-30°C)
- pH: 6.0-7.5
- General Hardness (GH): 4-12 dGH
- Carbonate Hardness (KH): 3-10 dKH
- Ammonia: 0 ppm
- Nitrite: 0 ppm
- Nitrate: <20 ppm
Additional Information:
- The Mango Pleco's striking appearance, combined with its reclusive nature, makes it a jewel in the aquarium for patient and dedicated hobbyists.
- As with any species, it's crucial to ensure their habitat is clean, stable, and free from stressors.
- Though challenging, breeding this species in captivity can be a rewarding experience for advanced aquarists.
