Common Name: Sumatra Datnoid
Scientific Name: Datnioides microlepis
Other Names: Indonesian Tiger Datnoid, Finescale Tigerfish
The Sumatra Datnoid is a wild-caught datnoid, listed here as a 4-bar fish. Datnoids have a deep, gold body with bold black vertical bars and a large, protrusible mouth, and they often hover motionless among roots and branches. It is an unusual and interesting fish that is highly prized by aquarists who enjoy Asian species.
Habitat and Distribution:
Datnioides microlepis is found in Southeast Asia, including the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins, Sumatra and Borneo, where it lives in rivers, lakes and flooded areas with plenty of submerged wood. These waters are warm and seasonally flooded, with plenty of submerged vegetation and wood for cover.
Size and Lifespan:
It reaches about 15-18 inches (38-45 cm). Lifespan in captivity is not well documented for this species, but with good care it can be expected to live for many years.
Diet and Behavior:
It is carnivorous and feeds on fish, shrimp and insects in the wild. In the aquarium, offer shrimp, krill and fish; many can be weaned onto pellets. It is predatory, eating fish that fit in its mouth, and peaceful with large tank mates but may squabble with other datnoids. Feed a varied diet and remove uneaten food promptly to protect water quality.
Breeding and Reproduction:
Datnoids are not bred in home aquariums. Little is documented about its breeding habits in the wild.
Aquarium Care and Tank Requirements:
A tank of at least 180 gallons is recommended. Provide driftwood, strong filtration and open space. The water temperature should be kept between 74-82°F (23-28°C), with a pH of 6.5-7.5 and soft to hard water. Regular partial water changes are essential to maintain water quality, and new arrivals should be acclimated slowly.
Ideal Tank Mates:
Good tank mates include large, peaceful fish, such as arowanas, large catfish and peacock bass. As with any aquarium, introduce new fish carefully and watch for signs of stress or aggression.
Difficulty Level:
Intermediate to Advanced. It is predatory and grows large. It is best suited to experienced aquarists who can provide the space and water quality it needs.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 74-82°F (23-28°C)
-
pH: 6.5-7.5
-
General Hardness (GH): 5-15 dGH
-
Carbonate Hardness (KH): 3-10 dKH
-
Ammonia: 0 ppm
-
Nitrite: 0 ppm
-
Nitrate: <20 ppm (regular water changes required)
Additional Information:
- Bar count and pattern vary between individuals.
- Many can be weaned onto pellets.
- It may squabble with other datnoids, so give each fish space.
The Sumatra Datnoid is a striking, boldly barred predator for large aquariums. With the right setup and care, it will be a rewarding addition for many years.
