Coming from the muddy waters of Madeira river in the heart of the Amazon Basin, the Tigrinus Catfish (Brachyplatystoma tigrinum) is one of the most exclusive and sought after species for experienced aquarists.
As formidable as these fish are, novice aquarists should avoid this species of catfish, as they require specific care, ranging from water quality to feeding. Juvenile fish present a dark and smudged color, not very flashy. As they grow, the stripes become more evident, as does their mesmerizing zebra pattern. The head shape is also different from adult individuals, being slightly shorter and more rounded. As they grow, their head expands and gives way to the characteristic duck-billed shape that species of this genus are known for.
A robust catfish with large and sensitive whiskers. Their beautiful banded pattern is sure to take your breath away. Its continuous striped pattern is evident even on its showy fins. These features make these rare animals so in high in demand amongst aquarists. An interesting characteristic is that different adult individuals, even from the same locality, have slightly different zebra patterns and different amounts of black colors overlapping a white base.
Despite being a relatively peaceful species with fish of the same size, this fish can be territorial with other catfish. Another mind-blowing quality we find in Tigrinus is the long filaments coming from the tips of its tail, beautifully complimenting their lengthy white whiskers.
It is essential to provide them with a soft substrate and the presence of plenty of hiding places. As they are nocturnal and sedentary, you will not always see them in the aquarium. A wonderful catfish, which fully lives up to its fame, a species for picky aquarists that want to keep challenging and highly ornamental species, sure to impress anyone who sees it.

Most of the commercially available specimens come from captures of juveniles and
cultivated in management centers, before being exported around the world. This method is more economically viable, but it includes an additional cost in the growth of the fish until they reach a marketable size, further increasing the value of this species, which is already high in the aquarium market. This breeding method also allows for a higher survival rate, as captured adult specimens do not seem to adapt very well to captive conditions. Recent bans on the export of wild caught specimens have also further increased the value of this species as well as the rarity in the aquarium trade.
